About the artist:
George Ashdown Audsley (1838–1925) was a multifaceted artist, architect, and author, celebrated for his contributions to art and design during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Born in Elgin, Scotland, Audsley initially trained as an architect but soon broadened his artistic pursuits. He eventually moved to Liverpool, England, where he and his brother, William James Audsley, ran a successful architectural practice. They designed numerous churches, public buildings, and private residences, often blending Gothic Revival and Oriental styles.
Audsley was also a skilled author and illustrator, publishing influential books on ornamentation and design, including "The Art of Chromolithography" (1883) and "The Ornamental Arts of Japan" (1882–1884). His deep appreciation for Japanese aesthetics and expertise in decorative arts significantly influenced the Western understanding and appreciation of Japanese art during the late 19th century.
